Good News from Europe

The Branch is absolutely delighted to announce the engagement of European Branch Secretary Kirstie Thoms to Chris Nials.

Kirstie and Chris stayed on in Glenshee after the recent Gathering and we understand that Chris popped the question during a walk in the hills around Pitlochry.

The photograph shows the happy couple celebrating in Glenshee.

Congratulations to Kirstie and Chris.

Glenshee profits from the big freeze!
By Kirstie Thoms.

The UK was struck by the big freeze throughout December 2009 and January 2010 with plummeting temperatures well into the minus figures. The land was covered in deep snow and surfaces were icy extremely slippery. Many schools were closed, transport systems were disrupted, and many business suffered losses as a result of diminished trade and absent staff. However, the Glenshee ski slopes have profited from the big freeze and Glenshee has seen its best snow fall in over 20 years! It has been said that the snow was 'powdery' and alpine like. This is great news for Glenshee which has suffered a huge decline in trade over recent years due to warmer winters and less snow. The big freeze has allowed Glenshee to rival European ski slopes and put Scotland back on the map as a great place to ski. Of course more visitors to the Glenshee ski slopes means more people passing through MacThomas land!

Burns night rain check.

Due to a lack of interest the society has not organised a Burns night for this January. The Society was disappointed by the lack of interest in such an event but hopes that we will be able to arrange something for a future year, if demand is sufficient.
The society is keen to hear ideas from members regarding possible events and activities that they would like to take part in. Please pass on your suggestions and comments to the European Secretary so that future events can be considered.

Burns Night Celebrations.......?

The European Branch is hoping to arrange a Burns night event in January 2010 to be held in London. Arrangements are still to be made but the event is likely to consist of a formal evening meal possibly followed by a ceilidh. Or perhaps members would prefer a less formal event and simply enjoy a haggis super…..?? In order to assist in planning it would be helpful to know how many people would be interested in attending and what sort of event you would prefer.

Please contact the European Secretary if you think you would be interested in attending. Your comments are non committal.
