Rodney Thomas Mooney is descended from Maine seagoing ancestors. He is now retired from two careers; first as a U.S. Navy officer and second as an aerospace engineer. He was fortunate to have both careers involve occasional travel to Scotland. In fact, he assumed command of his last Navy ship while she was moored in Rosyth, Scotland. In 1986, his late wife Irene, from a Virginia/West Virginia Thomas family, was laid to rest behind their small Andover, Connecticut church, clad in her MacThomas tartan finery, thus ensuring that a tiny corner of New England would be forever MacThomas territory. Rod was named as Branch Bard by former Convenor Bob MacThomas, who also assembled and printed a small volume of Rod’s poetry. At the Clan’s fiftieth anniversary celebration in Glenshee, Rod met a last minute requirement to produce an instant Clan commemorative poem and, as a result, was dubbed “Clan Bard” by Society Vice-President Robin Thoms. When the previous Branch Newsletter Editor stepped down in 2001, Rod took over that task, and continued until the end of 2010. Rod is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. In addition to his Clan MacThomas membership, he is a member of Clan Chattan and a life member of Clan Mackintosh. Rod was invited to become an Honorary Vice President of the Clan MacThomas Society in 2009.
